πΊ Story of Hanuman Janmotsav (Birth of Lord Hanuman)
Hanuman Janamutsav celebrates the divine birth of Lord Hanuman, one of the most powerful and devoted devotees of Lord Rama. This sacred festival is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Chaitra month, usually falling in March or April.
Birth Story of Lord Hanuman
Long ago, there lived a virtuous woman named Anjana, who was an apsara (celestial being) cursed to be born on Earth. She married Kesari, a brave Vanara (monkey chief).
Anjana prayed deeply to Lord Shiva for a divine child. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva blessed her with a son who would be an incarnation (avatar) of himself.
At the same time, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was performing a sacred ritual (Putrakameshti Yajna) for children. The divine offering (prasadam) meant for his queens was carried by Vayu (the Wind God) to Anjana. By consuming it, she gave birth to Hanuman.
Thus, Hanuman is also known as:
- Pavan Putra (son of Vayu)
- Anjaneya (son of Anjana)
- Shiva Avatar (incarnation of Lord Shiva)
Childhood of Hanuman
As a child, Hanuman was extremely energetic and powerful. One famous story tells how he mistook the rising sun for a fruit and leaped into the sky to eat it!
He tried to swallow the sun, thinking it was a mango. Seeing this, Indra struck him with his thunderbolt (Vajra), injuring him.
Angered, Vayu (his father) stopped the flow of air in the universe. To calm him, all gods blessed Hanuman with immense powers:
- Strength beyond imagination
- Ability to change size
- Immortality
- Protection from weapons
