The Glorious Legacy of the Raghu Dynasty (Raghukul)
The story begins with the sacred Raghu Dynasty, also known as Suryavansha (Solar Dynasty), believed to be descended from Lord Surya, the Sun God. This dynasty was known for truth, valor, and righteousness.
Famous kings of this lineage include:
- King Ikshvaku – the founder
- King Harishchandra – known for his honesty
- King Raghu – after whom the dynasty was named
The tradition of this dynasty is beautifully expressed in the saying:
👉 “Raghukul reet sada chali aayi, praan jaaye par vachan na jaaye”
(Meaning: A promise must be kept even at the cost of life)
King Dasharatha and His Desire for Sons
In the city of Ayodhya, ruled the noble king King Dasharatha. Despite having three queens—
- Queen Kaushalya
- Queen Kaikeyi
- Queen Sumitra
—he had no children, which made him deeply worried.
To fulfill his desire for heirs, he performed the sacred Putrakameshti Yajna, under the guidance of sage Rishi Rishyasringa.
Divine Blessing and Birth of Four Princes
From the yajna fire emerged a divine being who offered payasam (sacred nectar), which was distributed among the queens.
Soon, the queens gave birth to four divine sons:
Birth of the Princes
- Lord Rama
Born to Queen Kaushalya — the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, destined to destroy evil. - Lakshmana
Born to Sumitra — embodiment of loyalty and devotion. - Bharata
